Cooper Landing & Moose Pass

 Two very small towns in the middle of nowhere in the Kenai Peninsula.  We will not bore you explaining why we stayed here but we are glad we did.  The motels are rustic and basic but very busy.  The attached restaurants are also busy morning thru night.  Fresh food, brought in from Soldotna! We just keep being thankful the reservations were made back in September.

Cooper Landing;  A stop over for many interested in lake and river fishing.  Several businesses are thriving providing fishing tours along the Russian River.  Others are going white water rafting.  No, we did not take any of these.  The great part was the fact that Kenai Lake was within walking distance from our motel.  We went there daily and enjoyed the beauty, serenity of the place while fishing.  Wendy walked the lake each day, birding.  Unfortunately, this author did not even get a nibble.  Tried every lure  in creation.  Bait and no bait; bobbers and no bobbers and flies and no flies as well as every size hook in my arsenal.  All to no avail.   One thing for sure was the fact that you could not beat the view.





Currently we're in Moose Pass.  Again, the fishing, kayaking tours and scenic tours by plane are the main business here.  Next to the motel, is the scenic tours pontoon planes taking off and landing on water throughout the day. The hotel is quaint, right on the lake.  Also a restaurant attached to the motel.  Excellent food.

Today after a relaxing morning and after lunch, we went to Vagt Lake just a few miles away and hiked a beautiful 3.25 mile trail.  The best thing about this trail is that we had it all to ourselves.  The bad thing was the Alaska mosquitoes.  These guys swarm your face and head and attack in numbers.  The spray we used was like an attraction instead of a repellant.

Tomorrow we head to Valdez for a 9 day stay.  It is a 7 hour drive, but as we recall, it is a scenic ride like all the others in Alaska.  Until then…

    That trail looks like it’s in the enchanted forest. Could’ve lent you the netting we bought to slip over our hats for our expected visit to Vega the second summer you were there- we never got to use those babies😉 And the lake-What a serene atmosphere to fish and meditate! It really is beautiful. But nothing compared to the beautiful atmosphere here in Tebbetts where we have 104 degree temperatures to look forward to with lots of indoor air conditioning activities. I’m sure you wish you were here.

    My former Executive Assistant is an Alaska native and told me the mosquitos are legendary. Montana mosquitos are distant cousins. Safe travels

    Every single picture is breathtaking! I can’t imagine how you must feel to see everything with your eyes 👀 in reality
    But I need to add the Adirondack mosquitoes must be the closest relatives to Alaskan mosquitoes . 😆

Allison Point, Valdez

 We drove the 14 miles to get to the other side of the Port of Valdez.  It would have been 3 miles, if we had a boat!  This road leads to the Solomon Gulch Hatchery.  We saw quite a spectacle with the sea lions "fishing" and the gulls presenting some stiff competition! Denali

 Denali National Park is one of the largest National Parks in the country.  Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley, is the highest peak in North America.  With an elevation or summit of 20,310 ft above sea level.  Due to this elevation, it causes it to have its own weather and thus making it very elusive.  When visible it is only briefly.  It can be seen for many miles away and if you're lucky to see it, it is impressive.  If you can see it, you're a member of the 30% club! (visitors who get to view Denali) On our previous trip in 2016 we were fortunate to see it from several angles and distances.  This time we were not so lucky.  You can see that Denali is totally covered in snow.  This is the best we were able to capture from the bus during a short window when it allowed us to see it: Another misfortune of the park, is the narrow road that allows you to travel via bus to the farthest point 92 miles into the park, has collapsed. ...
